MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid needed a stoppage-time goal from Federico Valverde to secure a dramatic 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, keeping the pressure on La Liga leaders Barcelona.
Valverde struck in the third minute of added time with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box on the right wing, sealing a crucial three points for the home side.
Vinícius Júnior had a goal disallowed in the 80th minute after Endrick was ruled offside in the buildup.
The win moved Madrid to within four points of Barcelona, who mounted a thrilling comeback to beat Celta Vigo 4-3 on Saturday. Atlético Madrid, in third place, remained 10 points behind after a 1-0 loss to Las Palmas.
Athletic Bilbao, sitting in fourth, are now six points behind Atlético. Villarreal, currently fifth, are five points behind Bilbao with a game in hand after a 2-2 draw with Real Sociedad.
Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé — serving a suspension after receiving a red card — was booed by sections of the crowd at the Santiago Bernabéu. The French forward had also been jeered in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday, a result that knocked Madrid out of the Champions League.
